‘Croods 2’ reaches first place again 13 weeks after launch and reaches $ 50 million at the US box office
Thirteen weeks after its original release, Universal / DreamWorks’ “The Croods: A New Age” is once again number 1 at the box office of the pandemic, raising $ 1.7 million this weekend on 1,913 screens, pushing its gross total domestic to more than $ 50 million. Combined with an international total of $ 103.1 million, the global total for the film is now $ 154 million, not to mention sales of premium on-demand video viewers after the film was released on digital platforms in December, thanks Universal’s agreement with AMC and Cinemark. Universal did not release the sales figures for the film’s PVOD, but says “Croods 2” became the studio’s second largest digital release, after “Trolls World Tour”, which debuted at the beginning of the PVOD pandemic. In the meantime, Searchlight Pictures released the critically acclaimed Oscar winner “Nomadland”, both in theaters and for streaming on Hulu. Searchlight is not reporting box office numbers for Chloe Zhao’s film, but industry estimates say the film is grossing $ 500,000 on 1,200 screens after a two-week IMAX and premium display. The strange day and date format for a film is just another example of how the pandemic forced Hollywood to rethink how they release films. As discussed in WrapPRO, independent and special films can no longer count on the launch of the traditional four-screen platform in New York and Los Angeles to kick off an award candidate’s theatrical season, as both cities had traditional cinemas closed for almost a year. Nor can they count on the traditional buzz that comes from the Golden Globes ceremony and announcements of Oscar nominations in January, as the pandemic has significantly delayed the awards season calendar. Films like “Nomadland”, “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday ”will instead try to use their hybrid theatrical / domestic releases in February to increase interest which, hopefully, will peak when the Oscar happens in April, with the financial success of the films being determined more by service subscriptions from streaming and PVOD sales than revenue from a theatrical box office still struggling. All three films were released on the day and date in theaters and on HBO Max, although “WW84” is currently only available digitally on PVOD, as Warner Bros. is withdrawing its 2021 releases from HBO Max temporarily 30 days after the theatrical release. For comparison, this represents about 10% of the $ 12.4 billion collected at the global box office affected by the pandemic in 2020. Although the US box office is not expected to start to recover by the second half of the year – and possibly not before autumn – China is preparing to make 2021 its best box office year.
