Winter wonderland creates dangerous road conditions for San Antonio drivers

SANTO ANTÓNIO – The city of Alamo became a winter wonderland on Monday, after snow and ice covered the city’s roads and streets at night.

With the snow so rare in our area, some may be enjoying the frost. Others who had to maneuver vehicles with ice on the roads were not so satisfied.

“I just moved here two months ago,” said Gabriela Yambo, who moved from North Carolina. “I grew up in Connecticut and we really like the snow every week.”

Yambo thought that she had finally escaped the snow. On Sunday night, however, slippery road conditions intensified with 3.7 inches of snow falling, leaving many roads impassable in San Antonio.

Of the many wrecks, a KSAT team spotted a multiple vehicle pile-up on a ramp on US 90 near Highway 151 on the West Side, at which at least one semi-trailer deflected.

The Texas Department of Transportation closed local state highways on Sunday night as a precaution.

“We currently have teams that are trying to reach the main highways in Bexar County,” said Laura Lopez, a TxDOT spokeswoman.

Lopez said about 40 trucks were spraying brine and live rock on highways after plowing on Monday.

This unusual winter storm had a more substantial impact than people thought.

“I assume it doesn’t happen often, so I hope it doesn’t happen again,” said Yambo.

By mid-Monday afternoon, much of the snow and ice on the city streets had melted into mud and even water, but with future road conditions still uncertain, TxDOT says it’s not sure when all highways will be reopened.

The city of San Antonio sent the following statement to KSAT:

“Public Works is monitoring the roads after the rare winter conditions and snow accumulation. Teams are helping SAPD by placing barricades on bridges and overpasses maintained by the city to prevent drivers from crossing dangerous roads.

As the snow begins to melt, public works teams will continue to spread a gravel material that helps in traction of the vehicle. There are some faulty traffic signs due to power interruptions and we recommend that residents avoid driving if possible. “

Bexar county officials announced that county facilities would be closed and court cases would be canceled on Tuesday.
