On Wednesday, January 13, Donald Trump made history by becoming the first president to face two charges of impeachment. Apparently, Trump celebrated the occasion by handing out the country’s biggest arts prize, as everyone does. Per The hill, while the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the violent attack on the Capitol, Trump was reportedly busy handing out the National Arts Medal to country singer Toby Keith and blue grass musician Ricky Skaggs. Trump, who recently tried to give Patriot coach Bill Belichik the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was totally rejected, distributed the medals in “a closed press ceremony”. Those with fond memories should remember that Keith was one of the few artists who agreed to perform at Trump’s inauguration four years ago. Skaggs made his support for the president twice impeachment, saying, “I believe Donald Trump is the right person in the right place, and that he is prophetic” in 2016. It is not clear whether Skaggs saw Trump being accused twice on arrival. Historically, the National Medal of Arts is awarded to artists “who deserve special recognition for their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of arts in the United States”. Whether to receive this tribute from a president who has been twice accused tarnishes this legacy is a question for history books.
