A woman from San Antonio made several attempts to rescue a dog she found wandering the snow-covered streets of Texas. When all else failed, she realized she had one last idea: to use tortillas.
Kristin Salinas-Labrador, 28, was returning from work when she saw a black Labrador on the road and immediately stopped. Although she wanted to get close to him, the dog was very scared. Remembering that his wife told him to bring tortillas earlier that day back home, she was able to use them to slowly put him in the car breaking it into pieces, an encounter captured by WOAI.
After placing several pieces in the car, she managed to attract the dog to the back seat. While all this was going on, she called her partner, Nicole Salinas-Labrador, 30, who encouraged her to bring the dog home.
“As soon as we see a mongrel, whether it’s a dog or a cat, we bring it in and try to adopt it,” Nicole told NBC News. “So it was just another day, but we had never been through that snow before, so we knew we definitely needed to bring this dog.”
The source of Puerto Rico joked on social media that his wife used his “Mexican ways” to get him inside. They also laughed at the fact that his surname is Labrador, and the dog is a black Labrador. “It was supposed to be,” she said.
They brought him home and, in addition to being cold and scared, the dog appeared to be in good health. After giving him food and water, the couple nicknamed him “Taco” and scanned for microchips, but couldn’t find one. They started posting about it on some Facebook pages to find its owner, but no one has yet appeared.
As Nicole is also a leading technician at a local veterinary clinic, she decided to bring him in to keep him updated on her vaccines and microchip.
And although Taco weighs thirty kilos, Nicole jokingly says that she thinks she is a lap dog.
As for the next steps, Nicole would love to be with Taco, but as they have several rescue dogs, the couple is unfortunately at their peak. In the meantime, she plans to keep the one-year-old puppy in her home while they find it “the best home forever”.
“I have people who say they want this dog. Who want the ‘tortilla dog!’ ”, She said.
