At the an interview ostensibly about his new film Cherry, Tom Holland and Anthony and Joe Russo, also known as the Russian brothers approached the previously invisible spider in the room: Tom Holland wasn’t exactly the Spider man Sony wanted, according to the Russians. With great power comes great responsibility and, according to the Russo brothers, Sony I was not sure of taking on that specific responsibility.
In the interview with British GQ, the Russo brothers told how they had to fight for our patron saint of spoilers.
“We talked to Feige at Marvel about Holland and he was excited and then we went to Sony …” explains Joe. “And they said, ‘Let’s think about this for a minute.’ We could say that we were encountering resistance from Sony. So we brought [Holland] back, brought back, brought back, and we were relentless in our quest to put it down the throat of the studio that has this IP. The fight was over, but Sony continued to drag their feet … they were reticent, nervous, about delivering something that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions of dollars in the future. “
