Sia deletes her Twitter after reaction to the leaked ‘music’ scene: VIDEO

Triggered by news of your next film Music, Australian pop star Sia has spent the past few months facing a wave of reaction from the autistic community.

Disability advocates are angry Sia – who is not autistic – chose dancer and actor Maddie Ziegler – also not autistic – to play the protagonist and title character of the film that follows a non-verbal autistic teenager who uses a device to communicate with other people.

Critics cited that Sia did not allow autistic actors to audition for the film. CBS remake of The stand faced similar accusations of appetite after casting a listener for a deaf character after failing to audition for the role.

Ableism is discrimination that favors healthy people over the disabled.

Defenders’ criticisms increased even further with Sia’s discovery asking for guidance from Autism Speaks when researching the film.

Autism Speaks has been criticized as a resource and advocacy group only for parents and caregivers who ignore the voices of people with autism and see autism as a problem to be eradicated rather than a condition to be accommodated.

These facts alone put Sia in the crosshairs of disability advocates and real autists across the internet.

But now she is involved in controversy again. This time, it was enough to make Sia completely delete her Twitter account, Huffington Post reported.

This renewed criticism was caused by some recent events. A scene that leaked out of the film came to the fore and drew serious criticism, and the film won two Golden Globe nominations, a development that critics fear will perpetuate these mistreatments of a topic that requires careful considerations of representation and sensitivity.

The leaked scene involves the autistic protagonist, Music, as she is physically contained in a manner recommended by groups like Autism Speaks, but is quite dangerous and considered abusive by some when used in real life.

People on Twitter were shocked by the inclusion of the scene in the film.

In addition to the tweets, Zoe Gross, Advocacy Director for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, shared her concerns with Huffington Post:

“MUSIC it not only promotes harmful stereotypes about autistic people – it shows restrictions that killed members of our community as necessary and loving acts. “

“This film should never have been made and should not be shown.”

Despite Sia’s defensive responses to the first criticisms of the film, she seemed to be overheard when this wave of reaction came.

Before deleting her Twitter account, she said the following in a topic:

“I promise, I have heard. The film MUSIC will, in the future, have this warning at the beginning of the film: MUSIC it in no way tolerates or recommends the use of restraint in autistic people. “

“There are autistic occupational therapists who specialize in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive feedback from deep pressure to help with the collapse.”

Sia went on to explain that this will be the last of that scene that we will have to see.

“I intend to remove the restriction scenes from all future impressions. I heard the wrong people and that is my responsibility, my research was clearly not complete enough, it was not broad enough.”

But for some, the damage was already done.

Time will tell if more updates or responses to ongoing criticism are reserved.

But depending on how the Golden Globes are doing, more reaction may certainly be coming.
