Shkodran Mustafi angered Arsenal fans by saying goodbye to “altruistic” Mesut Ozil, after the German ended the Gunners’ nightmare by joining the Fenerbahçe Turks.

Ozil, 32, is due to be officially revealed as a Fenerbahçe player after his £ 350,000-a-week contract was terminated earlier by Arsenal, with the midfielder not playing for the club this season.

The fickle midfielder had years of success after joining in 2013, but came out in a dark cloud after being exiled from the team in recent seasons under the command of former coach Unai Emery and current boss Mikel Arteta.

He also sparked controversy in 2020, when he refused to agree to a 12.5 percent cut in his gigantic salary, unlike most of his teammates, during the first national coronavirus blockade, at a time when Arsenal was having to fire team members.

Then, the farewell tweet from German colleague Mustafi, labeling Ozil as ‘selfless on and off the field’ and suggesting that the club had disappointed him, did not please some of the faithful Gunners on Twitter.

Mustafi’s tweet read: ‘Man, you have been the most selfless player on and off the field with whom I have ever shared the dressing room. You will always be remembered as #AssistKing. Unfortunately, we, as a team, were unable to help you when you needed us most. Very successful. ‘

A fan, @AFCHarv, wrote: ‘HE IS THE MOST SELFISH PLAYER WE HAVE’, while @arsenalbarclays replied, ‘Please explain? £ 350k / week: if this is not assistance, I don’t know what it is? ‘

Another fan, @ Marcus49AFC, pointed out Ozil’s refusal to accept the temporary wage cut, saying ‘Ozil refuses the wage cut that 20 of his teammates agree on. Mustafi: “you were the most selfless player off the field”.

@owiiemma added: ‘You are an Arsenal player. You must be on the club side. You must be trying to help us get over the situation. What is wrong with you?’

Ozil arrived in Istanbul on Sunday night, with Fenerbahçe tweeting some photos of his imminent signing, along with the message: ‘Our club is bringing Mesut Ozil to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes.’

Speaking about the move, Ozil told NTV: ‘I am a fan of Fenerbahçe. That is why I am very happy to come to Turkey with Fenerbahçe, I am very excited. God gave me the chance to wear this shirt as a Fenerbahçe fan. God willing, I will carry you with honor and do everything I can for the team.

“Sure, I’m missing out on a few games. I haven’t played in a while, but I’m physically fit, I have no problems, ”he said, adding that he trained with Arsenal’s first team during his time off the field.

Ozil leaves the club after helping Arsenal lift three FA Cup trophies during his time, the first of them in the 2013-14 season, helping the team to end its nine-year trophy drought.
