Random: this unused feature of DS Lite would have turned the console into a switch

The Nintendo DS Lite was a necessary refinement in 2006. Contributing around 94 million of the 154 million sales of the DS family, this slimline variant proved to be a great success, but 15 years later, we did not expect to discover unused features yet.

Described by the Lost Nintendo History team – which consists of “people aiming to discover and restore the secrets of Nintendo software and hardware” – they found that the DS Lite’s System-on-Chip (SoC) can allow players display the top screen of DS games, directly to your TV.

It was discovered last year, but only recently highlighted by Beta 64 on twitter. If you are curious to try this directly, you can find complete instructions in Lost Nintendo History. Just be warned, this requires hacking your DS Lite and additional hardware, so it’s not a simple task.

Why Nintendo never used this feature remains unknown, but it bears a striking resemblance to the hybrid concept of the Switch, meaning it could have been planned for a long time. It is a pity that we will never know Nintendo’s reasons, but nevertheless, this is certainly an important discovery.

Would you have used this feature in 2006? Let us know in the comments.
