“There is more agreement that Trump did something wrong than in the first impeachment,” Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Research Institute, said in a statement. “But there are still a good number of Republican supporters who remain with the former president anyway.”
The survey results also showed that just over half of respondents support Trump’s Senate sentencing, with 52% in favor. Many Republicans have complained about the impeachment process, questioning the validity of putting a former president on trial. However, Democratic impeachment managers defended their actions, in part because a conviction could prevent Trump from taking federal positions in the future. Among respondents, 57 percent said they supported the Senate action against Trump.
Trump’s second historic impeachment accuses the former president of inciting an insurrection by addressing supporters at a rally on the day Congress was set to certify the results of the presidential election. Trump spent months after last November’s election trumpeting unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud in an attempt to undermine the public’s faith in the election results.
The survey found that 54 percent of respondents were “very confident” that the 2020 election was fair, a 44 percent increase in mid-November, while a quarter of respondents said they “remain not confident” in the results. While 65% said they believed President Joe Biden won the election “fairly”, 72% of Republicans still classify Biden’s victory as fraudulent. A third said he would never accept Biden as president.
“Several ostentatious Republican Party leaders continue to spread this false narrative and many more who know that this statement is wrong have not been particularly outspoken in denying it. His fellow supporters of the American public are simply following that lead, ”said Murray in his statement.
According to the poll, Trump ended his term with a disapproval rate of 56 percent, equaling the lowest rate in his presidency.
The survey was conducted by telephone from January 21 to 24 with 809 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
