Migrants stranded on the border with Mexico thought they would have an easier entry: ‘Biden promised us!’

Mexico continues to struggle with the growing number of rejected migrants on the southern border of the United States, with many claiming that they were “promised” by President Biden that they could enter the country.

The growing focus on the border situation has brought journalists to Texas, where the problem is more serious: migrant camps fill the border, with camps of dozens or hundreds of people who are waiting to enter the United States or have just returned.

New York Times reporters witnessed a series of incidents in which migrants were expelled from the border. Most were crying, some saying, “Biden promised us!” when they returned to Mexico.

“Biden promised us that everything would change,” Gladys Oneida Pérez Cruz, a woman traveling with her son, told the Times. “He hasn’t done that yet, but he will be a good president for migrants.”

Cruz paid a coyote $ 9,000 for his trip.

Another migrant, Jettner, believed that his life “would change 180 degrees” because he was about to cross the border, but it was also immediately overturned.

Coyotes – human smugglers – took advantage of this desperation and took advantage of migrants, offering them promises to enter the country under Biden’s presidency.

Customs and Border Protection officials met more than 100,000 migrants at the border in February alone, highlighting how oppressive the situation has become.

The vast majority of migrants – about 70%, according to one source – are expelled through the public health order Title 42, which allows authorities to quickly return migrants to their country of travel.

CBP acting commissioner Troy Miller said in a call to reporters that the government is “acting as fast as we can” to rebuild the immigration system, but warned, “it will take time”.

“The border is not open – don’t believe in human smugglers who say otherwise,” he said.

But coyotes and cartels continue to promise migrants that the United States will be opened under Biden’s government, taking advantage of the most immigrant-friendly policy changes the president has ever undertaken.

The government has already terminated the Migrant Protection Protocols, which kept migrants south of the border while awaiting their hearings, and reduced the priorities of the US Department of Immigration and Customs to arrests and deportations.
