Here’s what’s going on in the television world on Monday, April 5th. All times are from the east.

Best choice

Hemingway (PBS, 8 pm, documentary premiere, consecutive episodes): “When modern readers criticize the American literary canon, they are probably complaining, at least partially, about Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway’s clichés are easy to decipher … To your credit, six-hour documentaries by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick Hemingway does not dispute much of it. Directors use the author’s own statements, letters, photographs and other writings to verify some of our worst assumptions. As cultural conversations about whether we can separate an artist’s exemplary work from his troubled personal life continually re-emerge, Hemingway penetrates the same muddy water and casts its anchor. ” Read the rest of Roxana Hadadi’s review.

Regular coverage

Wild cards

Only foals and horses (Acorn TV, 3:01, conclusion of the premiere of the first streaming season in the USA): Add this to your list of comforting TV shows to present while you’re folding your clothes: a four-episode documentary series about a team of horse veterinarians in Wales.

Mira, Real Detective (Disney Junior, 5pm, second season premiere): Our current reigning child detective returns, and as with his debut, it is not a very early time.
