The 45-year-old actress voluntarily assumed the role of intimacy coordinator on the set of the next HBO series, Mare of Easttown, to support her on-screen daughter, Angourie Rice, 20.

She said: ‘Because there was no clothes left on the scene, they didn’t think to bring an intimacy coordinator.

‘She said,’ Thank God Kate, thank you very much. ‘And I ended up staying in the car. I ended up staying in the trunk of the car.

‘I knew they would feel better if they had that person able to raise their hands and say,’ Actually, we need to cut it now, is everyone feeling well? ‘

Kate also revealed that she and Ammonite’s co-star, Saoirse Ronan, did not have an intimacy coordinator for their love scenes in the film.

She said, ‘It’s interesting that we didn’t have them on Ammonite and I think partly because, at the time we made the film, it was 2019. The intimacy coordinators were just becoming one thing, they weren’t a legal requirement for sets of footage. ‘

‘Ammonite was really a very low budget film, we didn’t have stunt doubles, hand stunt doubles, we barely had a snack. It was not something that was ever offered to us.

‘But Saoirse and I felt very confident about what we wanted to do with the characters in these intimate scenes. I think the two of us together kind of taking care of each other made us feel a little better.

The Oscar winner said she would like intimacy coordinators to be commonplace on film sets in the past.

She said, ‘I would definitely like to have them in the past, I definitely would. I really could have done that to that friend.

‘Just having a friend say,’ can you just ask him not to get his hands on it? ‘So you don’t have to say it, which can be very strange.
