Jeff Zucker shutters CNN Airport Network, quotes COVID-19

Air travelers will no longer receive news from CNN.

CNN chief Jeff Zucker said on Tuesday that the cable giant is closing its CNN airport network, which runs exclusively on TVs at airports in the United States.

The network, launched 30 years ago, will close on March 31, Zucker wrote in a memo to the team, citing a “sharp decline” in use due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the fact that more travelers now receive news from your smartphones.

“The sharp decline in airport traffic because of COVID-19, coupled with all the new ways people are consuming content on their personal devices, has lessened the need for the CNN Airport Network,” said Zucker. “Having to say goodbye to such a beloved brand is not easy … I’m sure most of us have a story to tell about which airport we were at when we heard some great news.”

Launched in January 1992, the network is broadcast at 58 airports in the United States and includes news programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from CNN and HLN, as well as entertainment programming from sister channels such as Cartoon Network, TBS and HBO.
