Impeachment trial increases Lara Trump’s chances of entering the Senate.

Senator Richard Burr’s surprising decision to break with his party and vote for the sentencing of former President Donald Trump paved the way for Lara Trump to win his seat when he retires in 2022, said Senator Lindsey Graham. In the opinion of Graham, a staunch supporter of Trump, Burr’s vote means that there will be pressure for more pro-Trump candidates to be elected in North Carolina and the former president’s daughter-in-law will benefit from this dynamic.

“The biggest winner in the whole impeachment trial is Lara Trump,” Graham said in Fox News Sunday. “My dear friend Richard Burr, whom I like and have been friends with for a long time, has just made Lara Trump the almost certain nominee for the Senate seat in North Carolina to replace him if she runs.”

Lara Trump, who is Eric Trump’s wife and grew up in Wilmington, has been defending the idea that she could succeed Barr for months. And Graham made it clear that she would have his support. “I would certainly be after her because I think she represents the future of the Republican Party,” said the South Carolina senator.

Burr was one of seven Republican senators to vote to condemn Trump in his second impeachment trial. This led to the condemnation of the Republican Party of North Carolina. “North Carolina Republicans sent Senator Burr to the United States Senate to defend the Constitution and his vote today to convict in a trial that he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” said the president of the Republican Party in North Carolina, Michael Whatley, in a statement.

If Lara Trump decides to run, she will face some competition as others are already trying to take advantage of Burr’s vote for support. Former deputy Mark Walker sent a fundraising email criticizing Burr shortly after the trial ended. “Wrong vote, Senator Burr. I’m running to replace Richard Burr because North Carolina needs a real conservative champion as its next senator. ” Walker tweeted.
