Demi Lovato shares post claiming that gender reveals contributing to transphobia and attracts mixed reactions

Demi Lovato is sharing her thoughts on gender revelations.

Organizing events to reveal the sex of a baby has become quite popular in recent years, and the 28-year-old pop star has now expressed that she has a problem with the idea, again sharing a post that says events contribute to transphobia.

On Wednesday, the “Anyone” singer shared a post that started with a graphic of a child looking confused by the text, “why gender revelations are transphobic.”

The post, originally composed by performance artist ALOK, said it was “false and incorrect to pretend that gender reveal parties are not transphobic. You can’t have your proverbial pink-blue binary cake and eat it.”

“This is not politically correct, it is just … correct,” continued the post. “We condemn gender revelations not because of our identity, but because of reality.”

The long post explained that the concept of transphobia goes beyond prejudice against trans people, but also includes “a way of thinking that understands non-trans people as more natural / organic and erases all others”.

Such a pattern of thought fuels the mistreatment of everyone, said the post, but especially of trans and gender nonconforming people.

On several other slides, the post continues to explain that gender-revealing events reinforce the idea that “genitals = gender” and limit gender to just “boy or girl”.

“This definition erases the fact that there are boys with vaginas and girls with penises and that there are people who are neither boys nor girls,” said the graph. “The idea that sex is based on genitalia is inconsistent with science.”

The graph added that the genre reveals to add to the idea that “while [trans people] can ‘identify’ as transnew, we were ‘originally’ ‘born’ [cisgender] and later ‘we become’ trans. “

Cisgender is a term used to define someone who identifies with the gender to which it was assigned at birth.

In addition, gender revelations have been accused of defending “gender binary and binary prevents people from observing reality”.

“The irony is that trans and nonconforming gender people are accused of promoting a ‘gender ideology’, when in fact we are trying to escape it,” concluded the post. “The real ideology at stake here is a system that romanticizes the denial of individuality in the service of maintaining the category.”

Lovato’s post drew mixed reactions from fans.

“This is ridiculous, if it’s not your son, you don’t have a say,” said one.

“Demi, no! It is incredibly unfair to say that to happy and hopeful parents,” wrote another.

A third added, “You can’t be serious.”
