Dbrand is making black faceplates for PlayStation 5 and challenges Sony to sue them

The Sony PlayStation 5 game console is currently supplied with white faceplates. If you want your PS5 with an all-black exterior, renowned skinning company Dbrand has just announced its own PlayStation 5 front panels that come in matte black.

There are no pricing details yet and Dbrand says he will only accept orders when there is enough stock at his Toronto headquarters. They shared that the front ends will go into mass production later this year and will be available in 2021. They are offering two versions to cover both digital and disc editions.

If you want to be the first to know when you can place an order, you can enter your details here. Dbrand also added that it will offer optional packages that include Middle + Controller skins once their faceplates are available for purchase.

Before the PS5 hit shelves worldwide, the company had already accepted pre-orders for its custom PS5 skins. Unfortunately, they canceled all pre-orders as they were not satisfied with the final look of the skinless PS5, as pieces of white were still showing.

It is also worth pointing out that a UK-based company had previously tried to sell custom PS5 faceplates online, however, they were sued by Sony for trademark violations. Apparently, they thought it wouldn’t be a problem, as Sony only had patents pending on the front plates. It turns out that Sony’s intellectual property extended to the front panels themselves and Sony would take the custom front panel company to court if they continued to sell them.

When asked if Dbrand was concerned about possible legal problems with Sony, the famous robot Dbrand replied “We encourage you to try”. Another person also asked Dbrand what his plan is to not be sued, they replied “Good try, Sony”.

We are also curious to see how Dbrand is getting around intellectual property issues. What we do know is that they do not feature the PS5 logo and there may be a slight change in design to differentiate themselves from the boards produced by Sony.

At the moment, the PS5 is still hard to find and Sony has not even replenished its stocks during its official launch in Malaysia. To recap, the PS5 digital edition costs RM1,869 and the Blu-ray Ultra HD drive version costs RM2,299.
