Army Green Beret Accused of Shooting Murder at Illinois Bowling Alley

Three people died and three were wounded in gunfire.

Police arrested and charged an Army Green Beret with murder and other charges in connection with the Saturday night shooting at a bowling alley in Rockford, Illinois.

Three unidentified men, who were 73, 69 and 65 years old, were killed when a gunfire broke out in Don Carter Lanes at around 6:55 pm, Rockford Police Chief Dan O ‘Shea told reporters on Sunday afternoon. A 62-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot several times, a 14-year-old victim was shot in the face and was in stable condition at a hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, and a 16-year-old victim was shot in the shoulder, treated at local and released, police said.

Officers arrested the army sergeant. First-class Duke Webb, 37, who is a Florida resident, accused him of three counts of murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to Shea. There did not appear to be an immediate connection between Webb and the victims, the police said.

Webb joined the Army in 2008 and is currently assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, according to a statement from the US Army. He was on leave at the time of the shooting, the statement said.

The bowling alley and its bar were closed due to the restrictions of COVID-19. The 14- and 16-year-old victims were taking food at the time of the incident, police said.

The victims were shot inside and outside the facility, police said. Shea said the investigation was ongoing and most of the incident was captured by surveillance cameras.

The Army said it would cooperate with Rockford police in its investigation.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn about this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the dead and wounded,” said Col. John W. Sannes, commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), in a statement.
