Young mother is Triangle’s first traffic fatality in 2021 :: WRAL.com

An accident on New Year’s Day on Interstate 85, heading north in Orange County, killed a mother of five, age 30, officials said.

Graham’s Shadeshia Brooks was driving toward Durham on I-85 when he lost control of his Ford pickup truck near the Interstate 40 division near Hillsborough shortly after 1:30 pm, officials said.

The pickup came off the right side of the highway, hit a railing and overturned. Brooks, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck and killed, officials said.

Speed was not a factor in the accident, officials said, but they are still trying to determine whether road conditions have had an influence.

Northbound I-85 was closed for a few hours while authorities investigated the accident, but the highway reopened at 4 pm.
