World Health Organization holds press conference while countries face changes in Covid

World Health Organization officials are giving a press conference on Monday about the coronavirus pandemic, while more countries report cases with new contagious mutations of the virus.

Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases said on Sunday that it found a new variant of the coronavirus in four passengers from Brazil. The institute said the new strain appears to have some of the same qualities, such as greater infectivity, than other variations discovered in the UK and South Africa.

Meanwhile, the United States has found at least 63 cases of Covid-19 with the most contagious new strain of the virus first identified in the UK, known as B.1.1.7, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. -market. The variant does not appear to make patients ill or increase the risk of death, health officials said.

The coronavirus has infected more than 90.4 million people worldwide and has killed at least 1.9 million people, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
