The monkey’s paw

Excellent villain costume Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) absorbed the power of Dreamstone, giving it the ability to fulfill people’s desires and fulfill their own desires in return. However, Dreamstone is a monkey’s paw – it is creating chaos as Lord gives people what they want.

The Lord’s body also begins to fail due to the power of the stone, but it drains people’s life-force to stay healthy. So it is clearly a bad situation that will only get worse, but he is very focused on himself and crazy about the power to see it.

Since they are the good guys, Diana and the resurrected Steve Trevor (Gal Gadot and Chris Pine) discover that the stone was created by the God of Betrayal and Betrayal (who looks a lot like Marvel Loki), and takes people’s most valuable assets as it grants their wishes. Steve has been restored – his soul inhabiting some guy’s body – by the stone after Diana wished to have him back, but he is draining his demigod powers in return.

However, Diana’s friend, Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), also made a wish to become powerful and stylish as her friend. So she has a sweet ’80s wardrobe, newfound balance and superhuman strength: the most dangerous combination of all.

Diana finally accepts that she will have to let Steve go.

Give up everything or not

Diana and Steve realize that the only way to undo the chaos of the stone is to renounce their desires, and he convinces her to let him go so that his power can be restored. At least they could embark on a great adventure in the 1980s together, and Diana could move on emotionally.

But Barbara is not willing to give up her strength or common sense to dress to regain her empathy, and she allies with Lord. None of them realize that he’s taking the world to the apocalypse, because it’s a superhero movie and the stakes have to be high.

Climbing in the 80s

Meeting with the President of the United States, Lord discovers that he can communicate with everyone on the planet using a top-secret satellite transmission system, so that he can fulfill all his wishes and obtain absolute power in return. (Presumably, he would have just broadcast live on YouTube or Facebook Live if he had devised this scheme in 2020.)

Since this is the Cold War era, the unintended consequence of the Lord’s feast of wishes is to lead the United States and Russia to nuclear war.

Diana wears the golden armor of the legendary Amazon warrior Asteria, then uses her newfound ability to fly to reach the transmission system. She fights Barbara, who wanted to become a “cutting edge predator” and become a cheetah. I don’t think people become cheetahs if they get really strong, but that’s what happened to her character in the comics and we should pay tribute to the source material.

It turns out that Diana is still the apex predator anyway, and she knocks Barbara down hard.

The Wonder Woman’s Bond of Truth proves vital to stop Max Lord.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Mass resignation

The world is falling apart as the Lord of global transmission grants everyone’s wishes, so Diana uses her Bond of Truth to communicate with everyone through him. It convinces everyone to accept reality and renounce their desires, avoiding nuclear disaster and basically making everyone relax.

Lord also sees his son wandering alone in chaos and realizes that he has been a bad father, so he renounces his own wishes and does not leave to meet the young boy. Barbara also renounces desire and returns to normal.

In the sequence, we jump to Diana wandering through a festive market – defining this film as a favorite vacation future – and running to the guy whose body Steve took over.

Midcredits’ Stinger

In a busy city market, a mysterious woman effortlessly saves a child from a fallen post. The child’s grateful mother asks the woman her name, to which she replies “Asteria” – played by Lynda Carter, who played the 70’s Wonder Woman show for Diana.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” she says to her mother, before blinking and leaving.

What does that mean?

At the beginning of the film, we learned that, in the distant past, Asteria stayed behind to distract the attacking men so that her fellow Amazonians could reach Themyscira. Diana searched for her before the events of this film, but only managed to find her golden armor – it seems that she has been quietly superheroine all this time.

It could just be a cameo for OG’s live action Wonder Woman, or it could be preparing Carter for a bigger role in third Wonder Woman movie. It would certainly be nice to see Gadot and Carter come face to face and learn more about what Asteria has been doing all this time.

Unanswered questions

  • Did the Lord face any consequences for your actions? It seems that the magical nature of desires made the whole situation disappear from people’s minds like a dream, so the United States and Russia may have forgotten how close they were to destroying themselves.
  • Who remembers what? It seems likely that Diana and Lord will remember everything that happened, as they were right in the center of the events caused by Dreamstone and maintained their agency, but everyone else seemed to be under the influence of the stone and in a state of trance. .
  • What happened to Barbara? Did she go back to work at the museum after her furry form disappeared? Has your memory of style, balance and super strength faded?
  • Was Dreamstone destroyed? It turns to dust when the Lord absorbs his power, but we don’t see him reforming after he rejects his power.
  • When did Diana get her golden armor? This was probably edited to save time, but in one minute she is discovering her power to fly and the next she is armored and arriving at the broadcast station. It’s weird that she went back to her Washington DC apartment in the middle, even though she looks super cool in chic clothes.

Since magic plays a big role in all of this, it’s easy to use it to explain everything. It’s magical, don’t worry about it.
