Woman dies after falling between subway cars while moving 2 trains at UWS

A 32-year-old woman died after being hit by a subway 2 train bound for Brooklyn on Saturday morning, after being seen among the wagons of the moving train, police said.

The incident happened just before 1 am on a subway train number 2, as he was entering 96th Street / Broadway Station. A witness told police he saw the woman smoking among the cars. She lost her balance when the train entered the station, falling between the cars and later being hit by one of the metro cars, according to the police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The subway system continues to close indefinitely between 1 and 5 am daily so that teams can thoroughly clean the subway cars, a policy that the MTA did during the beginning of the pandemic.

The MTA prevents passengers from walking or walking between moving subway cars, citing the danger of doing so. They consistently warned against the dangers of walking between metro cars after a series of deaths in 2018 related to people who fell on the tracks due to the movement of the metro cars. Among those fatal incidents was one on May 29, 2018, where a man walking between subway cars slipped and fell under a train bound for Manhattan that was stopping at 63rd Drive / Rego Park Station, according to police at the time.

On December 26 of that year, a 25-year-old died while walking and falling between subway cars at the 23rd Street 1/2 train station in Chelsea.

The NYPD did not provide statistics on the number of deaths on the subway related to the fall between cars.
