A woman was arrested after allegedly exchanging UPC codes on goods at Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages.
Melissa Kay Preston, 33, of Wildwood, entered the store just before 5 pm on Wednesday and placed several items in her cart before heading to the self-checkout lane, according to an arrest report from the Sheriff’s Office of the Sumter County. She scanned some of the items, but used the incorrect universal production code to make the items cheaper. The native of Cadillac, Michigan, was unable to scan other goods and put them in bags in her shopping cart.
Preston, who had previously been convicted of theft in Marion County, was arrested on charges of theft due to previous convictions. She was sued at Sumter County Detention Center on $ 2,000 bail.
Preston was arrested last May after alleging that she had been kidnapped.
