White Sox designated Emilio Vargas

The White Sox designated right-handed Emilio Vargas for assignment, James Fegan of The Athletic tweets. Your spot in the 40-man squad will go to the left Carlos rodon, which officially resigned.

It was not a long stay at Chicago’s 40-man for Vargas, whom the White Sox claimed Diamondback exemption in the second half of November. Vargas joined the White Sox as someone with no major league experience or a potential high-level pedigree. Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs wrote before 2020 that “Vargas is a Triple-A deep arm with a fleece-based 40 fastball and a 45-based fastball based on how she plays at the top of the zone.”

Vargas, who turned 24 in August, has so far hit the Double-A ball in the grassroots categories. He did a decent job keeping runs off the board with 121 1/3 innings of 3.86 ERA ball and 100 eliminations against 31 walks.
