PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It may have been a White Christmas this year, but it is now causing a headache for many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.
Many residents reported that their streets remain plowed and untreated, making driving and walking conditions dangerous.
Carrick is one of those neighborhoods, with Spokane Avenue just across the street from Carrick High School.
Some Carrick residents decided not to wait for the city and removed the snow in their own hands, shoveling the streets after waiting for the city’s plows and salt trucks.
“This is the whole neighborhood that goes out and has to do that,” said Peter Freeman, a resident of Carrick.
“It’s awful,” added Biff Austin. “It is never plowed and salted unless you call and complain about it. I think they forget you’re here. “
Austin has lived in Carrick for 12 years and looks like he was forgotten after a winter storm.
“There was nothing clean this morning when I took my daughter to work,” he said, “18th Street was covered, Brownsville Road.”
However, Carrick is not the only neighborhood in Pittsburgh to deal with these conditions.
There are several unpaved or slippery roads in Overbrook, too.
KDKA received several calls and emails from viewers complaining about poor conditions in neighborhoods like South Side, Lincoln Place and Hays.
Pittsburgh City Councilor Anthony Coghill, a District 4 representative, posted on Facebook this morning that his office has received more than 50 complaints about unsecured streets. He says the holiday is partly responsible for the slow start.
District 4 includes Brookline, Beechview, Bon Air, Carrick, Mr. Washington and Overbrook.
A representative from Mayor Bill Peduto’s office said the teams are still working to clean the streets and that officials from the Department of Public Works in other divisions are also coming to help.
“It’s becoming a dangerous situation,” said Freeman. “I don’t know if I can go up this street now. There was no one who added salt. We pay taxes and this has been happening year after year. “
Carrick and Overbrook are not alone.
Brookline’s Berkshire Avenue was still covered in snow and ice when our teams were out of the house on Saturday night.
The city also said that some neighborhoods are also experiencing delays in garbage collection and recycling, saying that some neighborhoods that should have garbage collection today may not have until Monday or Tuesday.
Covered roads have not only caused headaches for residents, but have also become a danger to drivers.
About 800 Duquesne Light customers were left without power after a car accident destroyed a pole and its cables on West Liberty Avenue.
According to Duquesne Light, the teams initially struggled to reach the site because of the icy roads, but now they say the vast majority of customers should have their energy restored.
