Vice President Kamala Harris will soon be residing on the premises of the Naval Observatory in northwest Washington, DC, in a home occupied by her predecessors for more than four decades.

Harris, 56, will live in the 19th century home with her husband, Doug Emhoff, 56, at Number One Observatory Circle. She will be the eighth vice president to reside in the Queen Anne-style house, which became the official home of the acting vice president in 1974, according to the official White House website.

The three-story house, built in 1894, is made of brick and wood, with green shutters and a partial porch. The house, which occupies 72 hectares, also has a remodeled living room, living room, garden room, two rooms, reception hall, kitchen and dining room.
The house itself was initially built for the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory (the observatory is still in use by the Navy today), but the then head of naval operations “expelled” the superintendent so that he could occupy it instead. .

The decision was later made to convert the home into the vice president’s residence in 1974, but vice president Gerald Ford never settled down before assuming the presidency after Nixon’s resignation. It was not until Walter Mondale, who served under President Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981, that a vice president finally moved. It has since been home to Vice Presidents Bush, Quayle, Gore, Cheney, Biden and Pence, and their families. (Pence left home before appearing on Wednesday.)

Current Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, is not moving into the residence immediately to “allow repairs to the house that are more easily carried out with the house unoccupied,” an aide confirmed to Fox News, adding that the repairs involved chimey liners and other household maintenance.
