What really caused the critical failure of Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble was finally revealed

Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens put on a typically brutal Last Man Standing fight at the Royal Rumble, and as expected, The Tribal Chief emerged victorious.

The finish, however, left much to be desired. Paul Heyman struggled to unlock a handcuffed Roman Reigns, and the delay even caused the referee to stop counting. The fans were quick to point out the critical flaw, as Roman Reigns had no chance to beat the count if the referee had not stopped. The handcuffs were finally removed and Kevin Owens was counted.

Dave Meltzer has now revealed on Post-RAW Wrestling Observer Radio why Paul Heyman found it difficult to unlock the handcuffs. Meltzer reported that the keyhole was on the wrong side.

As ridiculous as it sounds, the keyhole was on the wrong side and Heyman couldn’t find it in time. Meltzer and Alvarez had a hilarious conversation about the strange place:

Meltzer: Okay, so the handcuffs, the key hole was on the wrong side. The keyhole was on the wrong side. They didn’t get it in time or anything. Time has stopped.

Alvarez: Was it on the wrong side? So, why didn’t he turn the handcuff?

Meltzer: Eventually, he did (laughs). They got him out of there!

Alvarez: So, he was just shoving the key into the side where there was no hole and couldn’t figure out why it didn’t work?

Meltzer: I don’t know, yes!

Alvarez: The big question is that no one had cutting pliers in the building to loosen it?

Meltzer: Maybe they could, but they were not going to beat the ten count.

Alvarez: Well, they would never beat the ten count anyway. They might as well have these things out there.

Meltzer: Maybe no one was thinking about pliers himself! Maybe they were just thinking that we need a key.

Meltzer joked that WWE would hide the pliers when they planned to have a similar location in the future.

Keeping the sloppy finish aside, Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens organized a memorable match for the Universal Championship. It had all the explosive elements that kept fans engaged throughout the contest. As reported by Meltzer, the current plan is to have Roman Reigns vs. Edge at WrestleMania 37.

WWE wants to bring some fans back to WrestleMania 37, and the Spears battle must be a remarkable fight for the biggest stage of them all.
