Following the debut of “Wendy Williams: The Movie” on Saturday, Wendy Williams talked about her incredible – and often chaotic – life in the documentary “Wendy Williams: What a Mess!”
While filled with her characteristic attitude and boldness, she also offered more than just an enigmatic line about her life and ex-husband, Kevin Hunter.
“In a good way, this was a hellish year,” Williams, 56, opened the documentary while he was strapped to his lymphedema machine.
Chewing on Doritos and caviar, which she described as a “ghetto mouth party,” Williams used her own words to describe everything from her numerous miscarriages to learning about Hunter’s new baby.
Here are the nine biggest revelations:
Williams’ battle with his weight and subsequent eating disorder
Williams’ parents, Shirley Skinner Williams and Thomas Williams Senior, often criticized the future radio and TV presenter about her weight and forced her to weigh herself every day.
“Wendy is overweight”, her mother, who has passed away, bluntly remembered her daughter’s childhood constitution.
Her parents would pack tuna and Wendy mustard with some grapes for lunch while she was in first grade, but she snuck in to buy ice cream and other snacks. To manipulate the scale during weighing, she leaned to the side.
Ultimately, the criticisms took their toll and she became bulimic. One night, her brother Tommy took her, but he didn’t stop her. She finally stopped vomiting because she read on a tabloid that the teeth of a famous star started to rot with vomiting.
“I’m a dentist,” said Wendy in the documentary.
Her interview with Whitney Houston was the turning point in her career
In a now legendary 2003 interview, Wendy chatted with Houston furiously over the phone for her radio show about her drug abuse, Bobby Brown’s struggles with the law and how it affects her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and more.
The tense conversation revealed a side of the legendary singer that no one had seen before, and the interview catapulted Wendy’s career.
Without the knowledge of many, what was considered a success for all was a dark period for the presenter of a daytime talk show.
“I was delighted,” said Wendy.
Sherrick allegedly raped Wendy
During Wendy’s press tour before Lifetime premieres, Wendy claimed that artist Sherrick “raped” her. The widow of the R&B singer, who died in 1999, told Page Six that the allegations were “painful”.
“Sherrick was a handsome man, a genius with an angel’s voice,” said Lynne Conner Smith. “We have three incredible children. This is very painful, not only for us, but also for your nieces and brothers. “
It was a surprising choice for Wendy to reveal the identity of her alleged rapist, which she would not do in the documentary because he is a “one-hit wonder”.
Wendy almost died from her drug addiction
Wendy started snorting cocaine as a way to stay awake during her radio night shifts. She would do this five days a week for years, but eventually, the habit got to her.
“It wasn’t a big deal and nothing much became a big deal,” she said in the documentary.
One night, she passed out and hit her head in the bathroom of the radio station when there was no one to help her.
“It is a miracle that I am sitting here now,” she said of the accident.
Wendy’s Pregnancy Fight
Wendy suffered several pregnancy losses with Hunter before they were married.
During her first Hunter pregnancy, she miscarried at five weeks. Upon becoming pregnant again, Wendy lost her second child at five months. Feeling that it was God’s plan for them to marry, Hunter and Wendy secretly married without telling their families until after the ceremony.
Tragically, Wendy suffered a second pregnancy loss at five months and, while crying, remembered having to give birth to a stillborn girl.
“I don’t know many people who could go through what she went through at that time,” Wendy’s sister, Wanda, shared.
She finally gave birth to Kevin Hunter Jr. in 2000.
Wendy’s trend towards plastic surgery
Longtime fans know that Wendy is no stranger to going under the knife for a pinch / fold, but she has become incredibly sincere about everything she did, why she did it and when she did it.
During the documentary, Wendy revealed that she told Hunter, whom she described as “hot” on her “first or second date”, that she planned to have breast implants and liposuction – honesty seemed to be the best policy for her from day one – some months later, he supported him.
A few years later, after giving birth to her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., Wendy caught Hunter cheating on her and decided to improve her body, so she did an abdominoplasty and more liposuction.
Kevin Hunter becomes “very controlling” and allegedly verbally abusive
Hunter, who managed Williams ‘career over the course of his marriage, began cutting people out of Williams’ life, including longtime friend and colleague DJ Mister Cee, who appeared in the documentary. Williams’ former producer Arthur Evans said Hunter became “very controlling” and said he was feared by many.
Eventually, Hunter was banned from Wendy’s radio station because he was verbally abusing Williams and the radio management.
Williams also revealed that his longtime security guard, James, was “dismissed” because Hunter believed that he and Wendy were getting too close.
“I was an emotionally abused woman,” she said in the documentary, “and I was taken in a horrible way.”
Wendy definitely stated that Hunter never physically abused her.
“He is not a woman beater,” she said. “He’s just a strange man with a lot of problems.”
In 2018, Wendy fractured her shoulder. At the time, rumors were circulating that Hunter was the real cause of the injury, but in the documentary, Wendy said she fell and broke her arm “on her own”.
Hunter attended all of the “Wendy Williams Show” production meetings, but once he was late, so Wendy started without him. When Hunter appeared, he smashed the glass office desk in anger.
“We were partly in denial and partly hoping that everything would work out,” said Debmar-Mercury co-president Ira Bernstein of Hunter.
The collapse of Halloween in the air
On Halloween 2017, Wendy, dressed as the Statue of Liberty, passed out live on TV.
At the time, his spokesman said it was a result of dehydration. In the documentary, she didn’t say what caused it, but said it was the moment when she decided to forgive Hunter for his infidelities up to that point, because he came over and caught her as a “damsel in distress” and encouraged her to end the show.
Hunter infidelity
When Wendy first discovered that Hunter was living with Sharina Hudson in a house just 14.5 km from her family’s New Jersey home, Wendy appeared at the house and closed the glued mailbox and painted “Kevin + Wendy 4 Ever ! ” at the garage door.
Although devastated, Wendy was willing to ignore the alleged case until one day she spotted Hudson in her driveway in Livingston, New Jersey, taking pictures for an unknown reason. Looking closer, Wendy noticed a baby bulge.
Drinking three bottles of wine before her husband returned home, Wendy lost control.
“I was ham,” she said of her interaction with Hunter.
She started drinking more and more, and Hunter sent her to rehab in Florida first and then admitted her to a sober life unit in Queens when she needed to film the show again. Williams said he only confessed about the sober house because the paparazzi were following it.
What fans did not know, however, was that their drivers to and from the “recovery house” were “horrible people”, who disconnected the phone line from their office and did not let it connect with the outside world in any way. .
She also revealed that while she was there, her father had a stroke one week and her mother had another.
After becoming healthy and leaving the establishment to live sober, Williams knew he needed to file for divorce.
After her divorce, Williams sold her home in New Jersey and moved to her “maiden home” in New York City, where she swims every day.
“I love my building,” she said of the Financial District apartment. “It makes me feel worthy.”
A Hunter representative told Lifetime that Williams’ claims were false or inaccurate.
