Washington hires Martin Mayhew as GM and appoints Marty Hurney to a high-ranking front-line position

The Washington Football Team has a new general manager.

The franchise hired San Francisco 49ers executive Martin Mayhew to fill the position, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said on Thursday.

Marty Hurney, who was previously finalizing a deal to become a GM, will now be appointed to a high-ranking role at the front, Rapoport added.

After meeting with Washington’s chiefs on Monday, things seemed to be falling into place for Hurney to meet with Ron Rivera and serve in the same position he did alongside Rivera in Carolina for five years. Now, just over 48 hours later, the club has changed its stance.

After a nine-year stint as a 1988-96 NFL cornerback, Mayhew transitioned to a role behind the scenes after graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000.

Mayhew, an NFL executive since 2001, will enter his second stint as GM, the first being promoted at Detroit Lions. After serving as senior director of football administration for two years before moving on to the 2004-08 senior vice president and assistant GM position, Mayhew was promoted to the GM role in 2008 and remained in the position until 2015.

Mayhew left Motor City for the Big Apple in 2016, where he took over as director of football operations for the Giants. He then transitioned to San Francisco in 2017, where he was the club’s senior staff executive for two years before becoming VP of player staff in 2019.

In another organizational change, Jennifer King will become a full-time offensive assistant to Washington, after spending the last season as a coaching intern, Rapoport reported, according to a well-informed source.

The 2020 season was King’s first among coaches, after she spent 2018 and 2019 interning in the off-season and during the training camp for the Panthers. She also served as an assistant at Dartmouth and the now defunct Alliance of American Football.
