With spring finally coming and the hot summer months approaching, there are many, many people trying to get in shape so they can show off their beach bodies (and, hopefully, vaccination stickers). We all know that following a healthy diet, observing our calories and engaging in physical activity is the recipe for losing fat, but many people would love an incentive when it comes to losing weight and increasing tone. Science may have just discovered it, and it is ridiculously simple.

In a new study published in Journal of the International Sports Nutrition Society, the researchers explain that adding caffeine to your exercise routine may actually increase the rate of fat burning. Better yet, scientists were able to help determine the time frame within which you should take caffeine to increase your workout gains (and fat loss).

Caffeine is an extremely popular stimulant and is officially the most popular psychoactive substance on the planet. Its stimulating effects have made it a favorite for athletes looking to boost their performance, if only temporarily, but the researchers behind this latest study wanted to know how caffeine consumption affects fat burning. To find this out, they recruited 15 men and placed them on a strict caffeine or placebo regime prior to exercise testing.

The results pointed to a clear link between caffeine consumption and increased fat oxidation during exercise. The association was present regardless of the time of day that individuals exercised, suggesting that it is an easy way to increase fat loss during workouts, no matter when you decide to go to the gym or walk the trail. Caffeine intake should precede training by approximately 30 minutes, the study shows.

Study subjects consumed about 3 mg per kg of body weight. If consumed in the afternoon before training, the intensified effects of fat burning are more pronounced, but are present at all times of the day. It is not clear whether regular caffeine consumption can lead to a tolerance that can cause the increase in fat burning to change over time.

There are, of course, risks associated with using caffeine, whether you are using it during exercise or not. Individuals with heart problems or other illnesses that affect blood pressure, heart function, etc. Research has found a clear link between burning fat and caffeine intake, but if you have pre-existing medical problems, it is always a good idea to speak to your doctor before starting an exercise routine, and this is double that if you are planning to use a stimulant to increase fat loss during training. Don’t risk your life to lose a few extra pounds.
