The research, published by the Social Science Research Network, has not yet been peer-reviewed.

But MP David Davis last night called for the therapy to be implemented in hospitals, saying it was an “important study”.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis said: “The findings of this large, well-conducted study should result in the administration of this therapy to all Covid patients in all hospitals in temperate latitudes.”

He added: “In addition, since the study demonstrates that the clear link between vitamin D and Covid mortality is causal, the UK government should increase the dose and availability of free vitamin D for all vulnerable groups. .

“These approaches will save thousands of lives. They are delayed and must be started immediately.”

As part of the study, more than 550 hospitalized in Covid wards at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, Spain, received vitamin D3.

The University of Barcelona study concludes that “the adjusted results showed a mortality reduction of more than 60 percent” for those who received the treatment.

He stated that 36 of the 551 patients treated with calcifediol died of Covid-19 compared with 57 patients of 379 in the control group.

Northwestern University researchers previously found that infections and deaths were higher in countries where people had lower levels of vitamin D.

However, the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine said last year that “it found no clinical evidence on vitamin D in COVID-19.”

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Welfare said: “Evidence for the link between vitamin D and Covid-19 is still being researched and we maintain all strong evidence about the treatments under review.”

It happens after Boris Johnson revealed that he was “optimistic” about the lockdown survey.

On Saturday, government data revealed that Covid’s deaths fell more than a quarter in a week.

Another 13,308 Britons also tested positive for the disease – bringing the total number of infections to 4,027,106.
