Video shows shocking car break-in entering I-80 in San Francisco

The Dashcam video of what appears to be a shocking break-in of a car crawling towards I-80 in San Francisco went viral.

On Friday, Ben Barghabany told KTVU that he and his wife were driving from a real estate photography project on Dolores Street to Treasure Island for another shoot. The ride took them to Bryant Street, near the Hall of Justice, where the Prius slowed down near the ramp towards East Bay. Footage of the Tesla dashboard of a car behind them shows a black Honda parking near the Prius. A figure jumps out, hits the back of the Prius and quickly returns to the Honda with his transport.

“I was doing the drone and the video outside the house, so I think the guy started following us from there,” Barghabany told KTVU.

Barghabany said “the most expensive things” they owned were stolen, including $ 7,000 in cameras and a drone.

According to the San Francisco Police Department’s crime panel in 2020, motor vehicle theft and robbery increased by large margins year after year. In 2020, there were 7,487 robberies recorded in the city, compared to 4,962 the previous year; in addition, 6,052 motor vehicle thefts were reported to the police, against 4,442 in 2019.

The panel shows that more than 700 thefts have already been recorded in San Francisco this year. If this pace continues, the city would have 8,700 thefts by the end of 2021.

SFPD told The Chronicle that the incident captured on the dashcam appears to coincide with a police report filed with them at 4:30 pm on Friday.
