Vice President Kamala Harris wears SC stylist’s outfit on Induction Day | Charleston Scene

For opening day, Vice President Kamala Harris is now wearing two clothes made by black designers, one of whom is from South Carolina.

The outfit she will wear after the inauguration ceremony, which has yet to be revealed, was made by Sergio Hudson, according to showroom manager Kimberly Rosen.

The outfit that former First Lady Michelle Obama wore at the inauguration, a turtleneck, pants and jacket combined with a gold belt, was also allegedly designed by Hudson.

Hudson, the designer who also created the clothes worn by Nicki Minaj and Beyonce, makes luxury women’s clothing ready to wear in Los Angeles.

Hudson is from Ridgeway, 40 miles north of Columbia.

“I was a normal boy from Ridgeway, my grandfather had a farm, we ate from the farm,” Hudson told the Carolina News and Reporter in 2019. “I didn’t even know how much vegetables cost because I never had to buy any. “

Hudson grew up around elegant women, who played a big role in their search for design. Her mother had a tailoring shop and wore designer clothes every Sunday to go to church. His older sister was a catwalk model.

Hudson attended Bauder College, a design school in Atlanta, and then started working professionally with custom design when he graduated in 2005.

One of his first discoveries was in 2009, when he started dressing Lisa Wu from “Real Housewives of Atlanta”. Then he designed the black Kendall Jenner jumpsuit that she wore on her 20th birthday. In 2013, Hudson deepened his career by winning the Bravo reality show competition TV show, “Styled to Rock”, which was produced by Rihanna.

Hudson has since created custom clothing for Jennifer Lopez, Janelle Monae, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Khloe Kardashian, among other celebrities. Beyoncé was seen wearing a piece from her fall 2019 collection last February.

Hudson, along with Christopher John Rogers of Baton Rouge, shares the honor of customizing the clothes Harris wears on the day she becomes the new vice president of the United States.

Hudson’s design has yet to be revealed, but Rogers made the purple coat Harris was photographed with this morning.

AW Magazine reported that purple is a tribute to Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to run for president of the United States.

Harris’ characteristic pearls are also significant, an ode to his brotherhood Alpha Kappa Alpha and an accessory often used by Harris. At today’s ceremony, she wears pearls from Wilfredo Rosado, a Puerto Rican jeweler who designed the tailored necklace. Many people across the country are following suit and wearing pearls today in celebration of the event.

Symbolism was also achieved through Harris’ wardrobe at last night’s COVID-19 memorial service, which she attended. There, Harris wore a Kerby Jean-Raymond coat from Pyer Moss. Jean-Raymond collected and distributed protective equipment for hospital employees and provided $ 50,000 in donations to small businesses affected by the pandemic.
