Urban Meyer met with Shad Khan about Jaguar’s work

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have convinced Urban Meyer to come out of retirement. Meyer reportedly met with the owner of the Jaguars, Shad Khan, on Friday, and is gathering a technical commission if he accepts the job, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It is not the first time that Khan and Meyer have talked. The men reportedly had “regular communication,” according to Schefter. The Jaguars are looking for a new coach after dismissing Doug Marrone on Monday. The team has the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL’s 2021 Draft, after going 1-15 this season.

Meyer, 56, has not taught since 2018. He retired for health reasons after taking Ohio State to a 12-1 record that year. Before taking over from Ohio State, Meyer led the Florida Gators for six seasons. He won two national championships with Florida and one with the state of Ohio. Despite his success in college football, Meyer never trained in the NFL.

Who would Urban Meyer choose with general choice # 1?

Jaguars’ possession of choice # 1 in the draft may be what attracts Meyer out of retirement. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been presumed for months to be chosen with that choice. Lawrence is considered an elite talent and the best consensus player in the draft.

Ohio state quarterback Justin Fields is also expected to be selected early in the NFL Draft. Although Meyer has a strong connection to the state of Ohio, he did not train Fields, who started his university career in Georgia. After a year in Georgia, Fields was transferred to the state of Ohio. He joined the team in 2019, a year after Meyer’s retirement.
