After successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum on his non-throwing shoulder, the general choice is projected Trevor Lawrence should be full for the NFL training camp later this year, a positive development for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Meyer Urbano, which most are choosing to select the Clemson signal caller.
In a recent interview this week with the NFL Network, Meyer said he called on Lawrence’s Pro Day last week so that he and some of his new coaches could get a close look at his talent before surgery.
” We made a call from Zoom to him and I asked him – you have three options. No. 1, you can wait until March 11 Pro Day – but now you’re getting close to August [for a recovery time], ” Meyer said on the NFL Network, via Jacksonville.com. “It is getting late because it is a five-month recovery. It’s a six-month injury. The second thing, you cannot play.
“He’s probably a good enough player, but he said, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ Third thing, I said, why don’t you just take the ball and play a little? I would like to send our coordinator and pass game coordinator to assist. They never saw him. I saw him, so he said, ‘Come on.’ “
After throwing the ball efficiently during the short session in front of professional scouts, Lawrence recognized Meyer’s presence. New Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and pass coordinator Brian Schottenheimer were also present at Clemson’s training facility.
“I saw him, I saw a lot of guys passing by,” said Lawrence. “I just waved at him pretty quickly. I can’t really communicate here. It’s been nice to see all the teams leaving. Excellent opportunity. Definitely a cool thing to try and I’m happy to still be able to do that, obviously. “
Bevell said that before Lawrence’s Professional Day, seeing him in action was vital.
“I think it is important for me to just watch the ball go out of his hands,” said Bevell. “I think one of the most difficult things to do on tape is to be able to say the speed, and just the way it gets out of your hand. I also want to see what command he will have – kind of our first opportunity to be able to catch him in person.
“We will not be able to meet and talk to him as we normally would do before or after. So it will only be the training itself. But I’m excited to see you play in person. ”
Throughout Lawrence’s university career (37 games), he has 9,181 passing yards, a 66.7% completion percentage, 85 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 820 running yards and 14 running touchdowns.
