Urban Meyer adds Darrell Bevell as Jaguars offensive coordinator

Meyer Urbano is really starting to make rounds as the new head coach for Jacksonville Jaguars. On Thursday, he added a large chunk of his team.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Meyer hired Darrell Bevell as your new offensive coordinator. Bevell ended the 2020 season as Detroit Lions interim head coach.

According to Pelissero, Bevell was running for several jobs.

“O #Jaguars expected to hire Darrell Bevell as your offensive coordinator, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo, ” Pelissero tweeted. “Several teams tried to sign Bevell, who ended last season as the #Lions‘interim coach, but it looks like he will land with Meyer Urbano. “

Prior to serving as Lions interim coach last year, Bevell was the offensive coordinator in 2019 and partially until 2020. From 2011-17, Bevell was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and helped the team to a Super Bowl title in 2013 and another appearance in 2014. He was also the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator for the 2006-10 Minnesota Vikings.

Bevell was 1-4 as Lions’ interim head coach last year. This hiring shows Meyer’s willingness for a veteran team around him.

Former Ohio State defender Justin Fields believes that Meyer will be very successful in the NFL after spending his entire career among college ranks.

“Coach Day recruited me, but I mean, I heard great things about Coach Meyer and the way he trains,” Fields told TMZ. “So, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had great success in Jacksonville.”

In an interview with Jaguars.com yesterday, the legendary college coach said he understands the difference in the level of competitiveness between college football and the NFL.

“You are in a league that was designed to be 0.500,” Meyer said. “You are talking about Coach Belichick, one of my great friends and a person I have always admired. He is the best ever. You are talking about a winning percentage of 60%. You are talking about this league is built to have 0.500 … This is the biggest challenge is to look across the field and say, ‘they got what you got.’ Or sometimes, ‘they have more than you’. “

Another big issue that came up is Meyer’s health, which he addressed several times at his first press conference as head coach of team. Retired Meyer in 2018 due to health problems, which included a arachnoid cyst in your brain. He struggled with stress-induced headaches, especially during the 2018 season.

“Well, if you’re asking me if I’m going to like to lose, I think we all know the answer to that.” Said Meyer. “I am older. It is something I will be very careful about. It is something I will follow closely. I will be the head coach, but I will hire great coaches who will be waiting to do their job. I will not be running like crazy on the training ground. . Those days are over. “
