Achieving collective immunity – the point at which a sufficient number of the population is immune to COVID-19 so that further outbreaks cannot occur – is still a long way off in South Carolina.
Based on the Post and Courier analysis and the view of experts, only about 4.6% of the state’s population is immune or partially immune to the coronavirus.
The goal is that about 70 to 85% of the state is immune.
So, how do we get there?
This week on the show, reporter Anna Mitchell of the Post and Courier Greenville shared what she learned during her deep dive into this question about what it will take to achieve collective immunity in South Carolina.
News developer Bryan Brussee explained how they used the data to determine an approximate percentage of the state’s population that has immunity at this time. He also detailed how daily data from COVID-19 is recorded on the Post and Courier coronavirus panel and what recent figures tell us about the state of the pandemic in South Carolina.
