Two different foldable iPhone prototypes reportedly pass the first quality checks

A new report states that Foxconn’s foldable iPhone test consisted of two completely separate designs and that both passed the assembler’s quality control check.

Following earlier rumors that Foxconn is testing a foldable iPhone, a new report says it was actually testing two competing designs for Apple. The tests took place at Foxconn’s Shenzhen plant and are said to have been completed with both projects undergoing quality control.

According UDN money, what was tested were not finished phones, but the shells of these two foldable designs, presumably with screens. The test was specifically to assess the durability of the folding mechanism.

One of the designs is said to resemble the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, or the Lenovo Moto RAZR, with a foldable internal screen flip-phone. The other is considered a dual-screen model, more like an open book like the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

UDN money speculates that Apple will better evaluate both models and then abandon one.

Apple’s tests of foldable iPhone designs follow so many years of rumors and many patent applications on the subject. Earlier reports on Foxconn’s tests included claims that Apple will launch a foldable iPhone in September 2022.

The UDN has a decent track record with respect to Apple’s supply chain. It performs noticeably poorer in predicting Apple’s future product plans. Thursday’s report is a hybrid of the two.
