Trump’s impeachment is a ‘party farce’, Schumer would also deserve impeachment: Rand Paul

Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., Described former President Donald Trump’s impending impeachment trial as a “party farce” and said that, by Democratic logic, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer should also face the impeachment.

“If we’re going to criminalize speech and somehow challenge everyone who says, ‘Go fight to hear your voices’, I mean that we really should accuse Chuck Schumer then,” Paul told Fox News Sunday. “He went to the Supreme Court, stood in front of the Supreme Court and said specifically: ‘Hey Gorsuch, hey Kavanaugh, you have unleashed a hurricane. And you will pay the price.'”

TRUMP WILL NOT TESTIFY IN SENATE ‘UNCONSTITUTIONAL’ IMPEACHMENT TEST

“This inflammatory wording, this violent rhetoric by Chuck Schumer was so bad that the court president, who rarely says anything publicly, immediately said that this type of language is dangerous while a crowd tries to invade the Supreme Court,” continued Paul.

Paul pointed out that he opposed the “mistaken notion of voting to overturn the election with Congress or the vice president” that Trump defended. Still, he said there was a “zero” chance that Trump would be condemned by the Senate.

“People are going to have to judge for themselves … are we potentially going to prosecute people for political speech?” Said Paul.

Paul also said that the Supreme Court chief judge John Roberts’ choice not to preside over the Senate impeachment trial underscores his partisan nature.

“Judge Roberts said no, I will not cross the street because you are not impeaching the president,” said Paul. “This was a strong signal to all of us that this would be a party audience with a Democrat in the chair, who has already voted for impeachment.”

Senator Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the Senate, must preside over the trial.

“The Constitution says that the president of the court presides over an incumbent president. Therefore, it was up to John Roberts if he wanted to preside with a president who is no longer sitting, Trump, and he does not want to do that,” said Schumer in January.
