Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Wednesday that Republicans fearing to vote for President Donald Trump’s impeachment have the privilege of not facing more regular threats for their work on Capitol Hill.
House Democrats have signaled in recent days that their Republican colleagues fear that a vote for the president’s impeachment may incur threats against them and their families. Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive and one of the most renowned legislators on Capitol Hill, said that death threats are “a normal part of [her] existence.”
“I understand, but some of us have just spent the past 2 years taking up positions that have led to repeated attacks on our lives – for demanding guaranteed medical assistance, justice for immigrants, etc.,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) on a tweet Wednesday afternoon, reacting to reports of apprehension within the GOP caucus. “Sorry if there is no empathy, but it is a privilege if this is the first time. They can take a vow. ”
“Many of them caught the wave of this violent rhetoric or, at least, stood by it. Now is our chance to stop it, ”continued Ocasio-Cortez in a second post. “This is what we are sent to Congress for – the difficult things. All easy choices are made. If any GOP needs advice on how to deal with this, they can call me. ”
