David Schoen, one of the president’s attorneys, sent a request to the Senate leadership over the weekend asking for the trial to be postponed between about 5 pm Friday until Sunday in order to observe the Jewish Sabbath.

“It meant making you miss Friday night and Saturday all day that you previously intended for the trial. I very much appreciated your decision, but I remained concerned about the delay in processing a process that I consider important to complete for everyone involved and for the country, ”he wrote in the letter.
“Consequently, based on the adjustments that have been made to the President’s defense team, I am writing today to withdraw my request so that the process can proceed as originally envisaged before I make my request,” he wrote.
Schoen added that although he is not present on Saturday, his role “will be fully performed” by the other members of the defense team.
The decision could add a last-minute change to the impeachment trial schedule, with the Senate needing to pass the organizing resolution on the structure of the trial on Tuesday.

The Senate was expected to comply with Schoen’s earlier request not to hold the Senate trial on Saturday. Normally, the Senate meets for the impeachment process every day, except on Sundays.
Both House impeachment managers and the Trump team will have 16 hours spread over two days to present their case to the senators, who are on the jury. That would mean that House impeachment managers would defend their case on Wednesday and Thursday and the Trump team on Friday and Sunday.
According to the resolution released on Monday, the Senate would stop the trial on Friday afternoon and meet again on Sunday afternoon. The Senate leadership could still change that so the trial will meet on Saturday, before the organization’s resolution is passed.
“No trial process will be conducted on Friday, February 12, after 5 pm, or on Saturday, February 13, 2021. The Senate will meet as an Impeachment Tribunal at 2 pm on Sunday, February 14, 2021,” states the resolution.
