Trump defends conduct, attacks Democrats in first post-riot event

President Trump, speaking in public for the first time since he gathered his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol before last week’s riot, attacked Democrats for trying to impeach again and voiced complaints about Twitter and the next government, at an event designed to showcase your immigration policy.

“The impeachment hoax is a continuation of the largest and most cruel witch hunt in the history of our country,” said Trump in Álamo, Texas. The House is preparing to cast a series of votes with the aim of removing or impeaching the president for his role in last week’s violence on Capitol Hill.

As concerns over the possibility of further unrest surrounding Induction Day rise, the president also called for “no violence” after sending mixed messages about the riot in the past few days. He condemned the violent protests in a video recorded last week, before swearing that his supporters “would not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form !!!”

“We believe in respecting America’s history and traditions, not destroying them,” said Trump. “We believe in the rule of law and not violence.”

The president showed little regret for his actions before last week’s turmoil, which followed a month-long effort by Trump and his allies to rally his supporters with baseless allegations of a fraudulent election. Speaking to reporters on the Andrews Joint Base track before leaving for Texas, Trump denied any responsibility for the violence perpetrated by his Capitol supporters last week, saying his pre-riot speech was “entirely appropriate”.
