Reports indicate that the federal government now has more than 13,000 young people in custody. Many are being held in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cells for adults for longer than is legally permitted.
Democrats hammered Trump for his own way of dealing with migrant children. Under Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy, children were separated from their parents in an effort to prevent families from crossing the border illegally. Democrats have also repeatedly criticized Trump for keeping children in CBP cells, where they did not have access to educational, health or legal services.
The Biden White House publicly urged migrants to stay at home and not try to enter the United States. But the widening of the border has shown no sign of abating, and the government has been looking for answers after allowing thousands of young people to remain in the country while making their way through the immigration processing system.
The administration will house thousands of young people at a convention center in Dallas and another 1,000 in a tent city outside of Midland, Texas, with the aim of getting young people out of CBP custody.
“They are destroying our country,” Trump said on Tuesday. “People are reaching hundreds of thousands. Young people are coming in, leaving their homes and going up because they think it will be wonderful and, frankly, our country cannot handle it. It is a crisis that we rarely had and certainly never had at the border, and it will get much worse. … With a little bit of time, you’ll see these numbers expand to a level like you’ve never seen them before. “
