Trevor Lawrence playing today because ‘he has nothing to hide’

Welcome to Trevor Lawrence Friday.

Clemson QB, and the supposed No. 1 overall pick in this spring’s draft, will be released today to NFL coaches and scouts. Lawrence is conducting an early Pro Day so that he can undergo labrum surgery on his non-playing shoulder and be ready for training this summer.

THE Draft path Special, presented by Verizon, will air on the NFL Network at 10am ET today.

Jane Slater of the NFL Network reported Good morning football that Lawrence will report at around 9 am to get measurements (height, weight, hand size, etc.) and then start a shooting session at around 10 am ET.

Why is Lawrence playing when he is almost certain to go to number 1 overall for Jacksonville?

Former NFL QB Jordan Palmer, who is working with Lawrence, told Albert Breer of SI.com that the best prospect since Andrew Luck is to play simply because he loves to compete.

“The reason he wants to pitch is that he loves the ball and has nothing to hide,” said Palmer, who will lead the Pro Day session. “‘They want me to play, I will play. Yes, I will play for everyone. Look great.’ For him, he could sit there and say, ‘I’m not going to do this and here’s why.’ And you also have to understand where I come from, my brother [Carson] it was the infallible choice number 1, no doubt, he played in the Senior Bowl and played in the combine, because, ‘Give me a ball. I’d love to compete. ‘I have nothing to hide. I love to play.

“Trevor is the same type of guy. He loves to compete, has nothing to hide, confident as they come and loves to do that. It’s very simple for him. It wasn’t even an argument.”

The other benefit: we have something to watch and discuss on an otherwise sleepy Friday in February.

The Jaguars are taking this extra time to watch Lawrence in action, sending a contingent to South Carolina this morning.
