Tom Girardi diagnosed with Alzheimer’s amid legal battles

Tom Girardi was diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and dementia amid several legal battles.

The former lawyer, 81, underwent a mental assessment in February as part of his brother Robert’s efforts to be named Tom’s permanent conservator.

Dr. Nathan Lavid, a Long Beach clinical and forensic psychiatrist, wrote in a sworn statement filed on Wednesday and obtained by Page Six that the ex-husband of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star, Erika Jayne, is unable to attend any legal proceedings.

“Dementia impairs your ability to understand hearing,” wrote Lavid. “His emotional distress is directly related to his dementia and is compounded by his confusion.”

Lavid also noted that Tom’s short-term memory, attention span and recognition are “moderately impaired”. He also said that Tom suffers from “moderate” delusions.

Robert’s lawyer did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.

Girardi’s health problems started in December 2020, when he was hospitalized for a “serious illness. Robert then stated that he was suffering from short-term memory loss in January.

Robert was named Tom’s temporary conservative, who was denied admission to the California State Bar this week in early February.

Tom remains involved in several legal confusions, including the divorce of Jayne, who asked for the dissolution weeks before the ex-couple was sued by a law firm representing the victims of the Lion Air 610 flight for alleged embezzlement as part of their divorce. .

Girardi went on to plead poverty in court. The case is ongoing.

Also in December, former Girardi partner Robert Keese filed a lawsuit to dissolve his commercial venture, 1126 Wilshire Partnership. Keese and other lawyers claimed that Girardi did not pay them the estimated $ 315,000 they earned from the partnership, instead pocketed the money “for their own personal gain”.

Wells Fargo Financial Services is also suing Girardi for allegedly violating agreements he made with the bank.
