Tom Brady was prepared to make a change, if necessary, when he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2020 off-season: end the year with a new number.
Brady played No. 12 throughout his career with the New England Patriots and built a successful business out of it – TB12.

Coming to the season, wide receiver Chris Godwin had that number. Godwin said in March that if Brady didn’t want the number, he would keep it, but “I think just out of respect for what he did, what he achieved, just for the career he built for himself … You have to lean on that. “
Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht opened on Wednesday about Brady’s number change. Licht told Peter King of NBC Sports about his conversation with Brady.

“Another thing about that conversation that I never talked about was after we talked and we knew it was going to happen, I said, ‘Hey, there’s something else here. Uh, it’s a small thing, but maybe a big thing: we have a number 12 in our team, and he’s very good at Chris Godwin, “said Licht.
Brady insisted on not getting Godwin’s number at first, according to Licht. But he had a number to play with, just in case.
“Do you know what number I’m thinking of? I’m thinking of picking up maybe number seven. Is it available?” Licht said that Brady asked. “He said, ‘Go after that seventh Super Bowl.’ He said, ‘This is really cool.’ “
