Today I learned that you can disable Reddit’s nasty app install pop-up with a simple checkbox

My favorite way to browse Reddit is through the mobile site. This allows me to quickly check out some of my favorite subreddits to see what posts are coming up. Since I’m not normally connected, this helps me manage my screen time, too; you can only scroll down to comment topics until Reddit prompts you to enter your username and password. I see this as a sign that I have rolled far enough and move on.

However, I have a big complaint with the mobile site: it constantly pushes a big banner in my face, suggesting that I abandon all of this and install the app. Here is a picture of this banner from my phone, which you may have seen before:

No, I don’t want to see the page in the app, thanks.

Normally, I just close the prompt to make it disappear, but sooner or later it reappears, requiring me to close it again and again. The cycle never ends – or so I thought.

Today, thanks to Android Police, I learned that I can disable this pop-up forever. In fact, it is very easy to turn off:

  • On the Reddit mobile website, tap the three-line / hamburger menu in the upper right corner of the screen
  • You will see a number of options. Touch “Settings” near the bottom.
  • Uncheck the box “Ask to open in the application”. That’s it!

Uncheck the option “Ask to open in the application” to ban the banner.

This is not a new solution – TNW wrote about it in November 2018 – and if you delete your browsing history or access Reddit in incognito mode, you’ll have to turn off the prompt again. But thanks to this simple adjustment, my browsing experience on Reddit mobile has already changed for the better. I hope I can for you too.
