TikTokers ‘regrets’ seeing the doctor expose what may be inside the coffee grounds: ‘I’m terrified’

A doctor at TikTok is making viewers disgusting after revealing that cockroaches are commonly found in ground coffee.

Dr. Karan Raj has more than 3 million followers who watch him unmask the myths of science and health and share some of his knowledge. Dr. Raj is a surgeon who lives in London and also teaches at his alma mater, Imperial College London, as well as at Sunderland University.

His videos range from explaining how to prevent acid reflux to answering pressing questions, such as whether animals dream. But there is one TikTok in particular that some fans wish he had never posted.

In the viral video, Dr. Raj explained that pre-ground coffee – the kind you can get at most stores – can contain ground cockroaches.

“Just so you know … if you drink coffee, you are also consuming cockroaches”, said the video caption.

“Certain percentages of coffee beans are infested with cockroaches and other insects and generally cannot be processed completely,” said Dr. Raj.

He added that most food and health authorities allow a certain percentage of “insect parts” in food. According to Snopes’ fact check, this is largely true, however, it is not known whether there have been recorded cases of traces of cockroaches in ground coffee. Most examples, notes Snopes, are anectodal.

Dr. Raj recommends that you avoid drinking ground coffee if you are allergic to cockroaches – but, on the other hand, they are not much more than a small source of protein.

“Are you telling me that I have been drinking exactly what I’m terrified of all my life?” an unbelieving TikToker commented.

“This is one of the things I regret knowing,” added another.

Dr. Raj was also not lacking in more alleged curiosities in the comments section.

“Some people who work in coffee processing often become allergic to cockroaches because of the constant handling of the beans,” he said.

“Thank God, I only drink tea,” replied one user.
