TikTok will make personalized ads mandatory on April 15th

TikTok will no longer allow users to avoid personalized ads. As it stands now, the app includes an option that allows you to see only general messages from advertisers. That will change next month. As of April 15, “your settings will change and the ads you’ll see may start to be based on what you do on TikTok,” the company said in a notice identified by The Verge.

This is a stance that will bring TikTok in line with many other social media apps, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. That said, you will still have the option to stop tracking your activity on other sites and apps and thus use this information to further personalize the ads you display.

The timing of the warning probably has to do with the upcoming release of iOS 14.5. Soon, Apple will require all developers to ask for explicit permission to track their device on websites and applications. The move forced developers to adapt their advertising policies. LinkedIn, for example, announced last month that it would stop collecting device-identifying data.
