The makers of a new supersonic jet that could one day fly between New York and London in 90 minutes revealed the plane’s luxurious interior.
The Spike Aerospace S-512 Supersonic jet will have no windows to increase fuel efficiency and keep the cabin quiet, according to the Telegraph.
Instead, the inner walls will be lined with an extra-large computer screen that can be divided into individual TVs.
The S-512 is Spike’s contribution to the growing supersonic jet market, which has been resurging after almost two decades since the Concorde jet ended. Concorde could make the trip across the Atlantic in three hours.
Unlike the Concorde, which carried up to 100 people, the S-512 will have a maximum capacity for 18 passengers, said the Telegraph. The new jet is also slower, but it can travel overland because it produces a lighter sonic explosion than its precursor, said its designer.
“Concorde was ridiculously loud,” Spike CEO Vik Kachoria told the Telegraph.
“Most conversations between two people are between 65 and 75 decibels and the noise level found in most airplane cabin is around 85 decibels. Our windowless aircraft will have about 60 decibels, therefore, less than the sound of a conversation. “
The jet seats will also be convertible – so the cabin can be transformed into a meeting room, bedroom or dining room.
The Concorde traveled at Mach 2.04, or twice the speed of sound. Spike’s new jet will start operating on March 1, twice as fast as any jet on the market, Telegraph said.
The company expects to reach Mach 3.2 sometime in the next decade, which would allow flights between London and New York in less than 90 minutes.
