This Is Us producers blame ‘zoom editing’ for pregnancy test error

This Is Us fans recently accessed Twitter to point out what appeared to be an editing error in a November episode.

The scene showed a teenage Kate Pearson (played by Hannah Zeile) taking a positive pregnancy test. But eagle-eyed fans noticed that she was holding a box that clearly said ‘ovulation test’.

Now, the producers responded to the confused fans, explaining that it was really an editing error, mainly due to the challenges brought about in the COVID-19 pandemic and being forced to edit using Zoom.

One use tweeted after the scene aired: ‘I don’t want to be THAT guy, but Kate’s pregnancy test in This Is Us was in an ovulation test box and these are VERY different products,’

Ovulation tests are used to help women get pregnant and indicate when a woman is ovulating and most likely to become pregnant.

Another fan tweeted directly to Sterling K. Brown, who plays Kate’s brother Randall on the show.

‘@SterlingKBrown Help! A This Is Us fan page on Facebook is asking that. Was the test that teenager Kate was holding to be an ovulation or a pregnancy test?

The scene took place in the final episode, before the winter break of the NBC drama.

And it’s no surprise that viewers wanted clarity while wondering what the younger Kate would do about the pregnancy and how it would affect her future.

In season five, adult Kate (played by Chrissy Metz) was trying to bond with the pregnant mother of a baby she hopes to adopt.

“It will be good to put this to sleep, because our fans are so amazing and they take every little tip,” said executive producer Isaac Aptaker. “As soon as we saw that people were misinterpreting it, of course we went crazy. So, let the record officially show: [meant to be] a pregnancy test box. ‘

Executive producer Elizabeth Berger told EW that the error ‘may [be chalked] until the Zoom edition, explaining: ‘We are usually all together in a bay looking at these giant monitors.

‘Despite the dozens of people who looked at that scene countless times before it aired, we were all so fried from all the COVID [filming conditions] that we missed that one ‘, he added.

‘Usually, we are all in a bay together looking at these giant monitors. And this is the one where we think, “Ah, if we were just there, someone would have seen it!” She continued. “But everyone is working hard all the time under these crazy circumstances.

“And every now and then, you will have an ovulation test when you want to take a pregnancy test,” said Berger.
